What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the single indirect tax on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced excise, VAT and service tax in 2017. Since 22 September 2025 there are three main slabs: 5%, 18% and 40%. Essential items, including many life-saving medicines, are at 0%.
GST exclusive vs GST inclusive
An exclusive price does not include tax, so GST is added on top. An inclusive price, like an MRP, already has the tax in it, so GST is taken out to find the taxable value.
Example: ₹10,000 at 18% → GST ₹1,800, total ₹11,800. And ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% → ₹10,000 before GST.
CGST, SGST, UTGST and IGST
| Type | When it applies | Example at 18% |
|---|---|---|
| CGST + SGST | Seller and buyer in the same state | 9% CGST + 9% SGST |
| CGST + UTGST | Supply within a union territory | 9% CGST + 9% UTGST |
| IGST | Supply from one state to another, and imports | 18% IGST |

Common GST mistakes
These are the errors we see most often on invoices from small pharma firms and new distributors.
18% of ₹11,800 is ₹2,124, but the GST inside ₹11,800 is only ₹1,800. When a price already includes GST, divide by 1.18 instead. The Remove GST mode does this for you.
A sale from Himachal to Delhi takes IGST, not CGST and SGST. If the wrong tax is charged, the right one has to be paid and a refund claimed for the other, which ties up money for months.
Most medicines moved to 5% on 22 September 2025. An invoice dated after that at 12% overcharges the buyer and creates a mismatch in returns.
The rate follows the HSN code, not the name on the carton. A cream sold as a medicine and one sold as a cosmetic can fall under different codes and rates.
Freight and packing billed on the same invoice are normally part of the taxable value and take the same rate as the goods.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GST exclusive and GST inclusive?
GST exclusive means the price you enter does not include tax, so GST is added on top. GST inclusive means the price already includes tax, so the calculator takes the GST out and shows the price before tax.
How do I calculate 18% GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount by 18 and divide by 100. On ₹10,000 the GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800. Within one state that ₹1,800 is split into ₹900 CGST and ₹900 SGST.
How do I calculate GST from a total (inclusive) price?
Divide the total by (100 + GST rate) and multiply by 100 to get the price before GST. The difference is the GST. For ₹11,800 at 18%: 11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000, so GST is ₹1,800.
What is the GST rate on medicines in India?
Since 22 September 2025 most medicines and pharmaceutical products are taxed at 5% GST, and a list of life-saving drugs is exempt (0%). The earlier 12% slab was merged into 5%. Always confirm the rate for your HSN code with your CA.
When do I charge CGST + SGST and when IGST?
CGST and SGST (half each) apply when the seller and buyer are in the same state. IGST, at the full rate, applies when goods move from one state to another, say from a manufacturer in Baddi to a stockist in Maharashtra.
